Recently, POST staff have been made aware of courses in which instructors have attended a portion of a POST-certified course as a student when also acting in the capacity of an instructor for a small portion/block of instruction. Although these infrequent instances appear to have happened due to the best of intentions, the situation identified the need for POST regulation to provide better clarity in order to ensure individuals participating as students can focus their undivided attention on the learning environment. Further, these few instances were not in violation of POST regulation, as the language in its current state does not address such circumstances.
Additionally, the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) does not currently allow for the submission of a student on a roster who is simultaneously listed as an instructor for the course.
The acceptable exception to both issues are instructors who present on specific topics for which they are subject matter experts during workshops, seminars, symposiums, and other similar events. Instructors for these events typically present information or sit on panels and field questions from attendees (students) for 1-2 hour blocks at a time. After presenting, the instructor returns to the role of attendee (student). |
