ISSUE:
POST Staff will allow the University of San Diego to offer graduate level credit to persons who have completed the POST Command College Program.
BACKGROUND:

The Command College program in recent history has not had an agreement with a reputable university to offer college credit for work performed by students of the POST Command College.

Over the past year, the University of San Diego (USD) has initiated discussion about offering the college credit.  USD faculty have evaluated the Command College program curriculum and determined up to 12 graduate level credits and a certificate could be awarded to students who choose to apply for the credits with the university.

These students could also choose to apply the 12 units toward USD's Master's Degree in "Leadership in Law Enforcement and Public Safety."
ANALYSIS:

Combining numerous hours of "leadership" training with the opportunity to advance one's formal education is highly beneficial to the development of the individual student and indirectly to their Departments.

The option to apply for the college credit is voluntary and strictly between the student and the university.  Although the student must pay a fee to the university, there is no cost to POST.
RECOMMENDATION:
This item is informational only. No action is needed by the Commission.
