ISSUE:
This is a report on current basic courses' testing, remedial training, and retesting, presented as information only for the Commission.
BACKGROUND:

At the request of Commissioner Bui, POST staff conducted research of manipulative skills testing / retesting standards for the basic course.  Law Enforcement Consultant Mike Barnes provided a report at the October 2018 Commission meeting.  A conversation ensued, which included a discussion regarding late test failures and the reasons recruits do not complete the academy (e.g. self-deselection, failures, etc.).

ANALYSIS:

In response to the Commission's discussion, POST staff conducted a survey of the regular basic course presenters, which included identifying the success rates of recruits in the academy and reasons for separation.

The Basic Training Bureau will be making a presentation regarding the survey results and identifying current practices the POST Basic Training Bureau provides to the presenters of the basic course to enhance student success.
